As Principal Investigator at the Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS), Lisa Brüggen leads cutting-edge research and innovation in financial services. Her work focuses on addressing real-world financial challenges, from poverty and debt to financial wellbeing and retirement planning, and exploring the role of AI in these areas. She also integrates ethical, legal, and societal considerations into her work. 

Lisa is the Director of Netspar and a Professor of Financial Services at Maastricht University. She also holds the title of extraordinary professor of pension communication and decision support at Tilburg University, a position financed by Instituut Gak. Additionally, she contributes her expertise as a member of the supervisory board of NIBUD and the policy advisory group of the pension fund SPMS. 

An internationally recognized expert, Lisa specializes in financial behavior, choice guidance, and retirement communications. She has received numerous awards, including the AMA’s Emerging Scholar Award. Her pioneering research on improving retirement communication has earned her NWO and Netspar grants and has been published in top-tier international journals.  

Lisa’s mission is to address societal challenges through her insightful research and dynamic public speaking.
